Women in Consulting Nigeria, (WICN), have called for a more inclusive and equitable industry where women in corporate consulting are recognised, respected and rewarded for their contributions in the largely male dominated sector.
Founder and Chairperson, WICN, Sylvia Chomo, made the call at a meeting to advance the cause of women in consulting, matching mentorship platform for upcoming consultants, in Abuja. She said that women have made huge contributions in the consulting industry in Nigeria but are hardly recognised because the sector is dominated by men.
According to her, “The programme is all about creating a platform for women especially in the corporate world and to build a community of consultants across diverse industries serving as a powerhouse for resources and mentorship, experience and knowledge sharing amongst members.
“It’s amazing to see how WICN has grown because looking at the industry, it is 90 per cent male dominated and we faced a lot of challenges as women so this platform is a place where common minds and vision can come share challenges and find ways of resolving them.
Pioneer President of the body, Karen Akhilomen, explained that WICN seeks to empower women to lead, inspire and to thrive. “We hope to empower younger women especially those trying to find their feet in in the sector, to show them that instead of waiting for that 9-5 job, they can actually leverage whatever skills they have based on their experiences or their degrees to be a consultant.
Speaking during a panel discussion on ‘Overcoming Obstacles, Leadership Skills and Achieving Success’, Executive Director, Focusing on Women and Girls, Rifkatu Ademola, pointed that as women we need to dare ourselves that we can do it, regardless of whatever challenges we may face. “When it comes to mentoring or nurturing the younger generation, I would say that maybe we should have more intergenerational dialogue, where we have the older ones that are in consulting, telling us their experiences.”
On her part, Nnedimma Eyisi, a partner at the Castle Bridge Consult, noted that to foster inclusivity and equal pay in workplaces, women need to show that they are capable and competent as their male counterparts. “It always begins from building competency. When you build your competence in that skill that you have, you leverage the ability to get mentored, you are positioning yourself at a place where whoever hires you, knows for a fact that they are engaging someone who has it up here.
